Ba Be National Park sits peacefully in the northeast province of Bac Kan, a haven of extraordinary scenery, fascinating biodiversity and rich culture.
The ethnic minority communities live in small hamlets throughout the and still maintain a simple way of life, living off the land and fishing from the lakes and rivers. As you adventure through the national park you will have the chance to meet the local people and discover their history and culture. The many different areas of the national park are steeped in mystery and legends, the stories handed down through many generations.
The name Ba Ba translates as Three Lakes, referring to the three parts of the lake: Pe Leng, Pe Lu, and Pe Lam. The lake is the largest freshwater lake in Vietnam spanning over 500ha. It is also the highest, sitting at 150 meters above sea level. The vast lake is surrounded by impressive karst peaks that make up the Pia Booc mountain range and thick, evergreen forests.

This is the perfect place for any keen adventurer. Here you can trek through the thick jungle, explore mystical caves, kayak down the rivers, and swim in the lakes. The incredible range of terrain will keep you on your toes and keep your excitement piqued.
The national park itself was only established in 1992, making it feel as if you are exploring unchartered areas. Many caves have only been discovered recently and are providing new information about the geography and biodiversity of the area.
As well as the incredible scenery, this national park is home to a staggering 1268 species of flora and fauna, some of which are rare species. This really is a paradise for any nature lovers. Researchers have discovered 65 species of mammals, including Chinese pangolins, flying squirrels, macaques, langurs and bears. As well as the incredible mammals living in the area, researchers have discovered 106 species of fish, 223 varieties of birds and well over 300 types of butterfly. You could easily while away your time simply looking for these incredible creatures.
Ba Be (Three Bays) is in fact three linked lakes, which have a total length of 8km and a width of about 400m. Day 1 : Hanoi – Ba Be Lake (L, D)
07:30 -08:00 Pick you up at your hotel arround Old’quarter. On the way, shortbreak in Thai Nguyen to visit the marvellous Museum of the Culture of the Ethnic Minorities of Vietnam, followed by lunch at a street restaurant. You will then leave the main road to take a smaller one snaking through the mountains and tea plantations. When you arrive in the Tay village of Coc Toc, welcomed by Tay family at their traditional wooden stilt house. If it’s hot, you can copy the local kids and take a refreshing dip in the lake to cool down. In the evening, you will enjoy a superb dinner with the lovely family on the lake terrace. You will spend the night in Homestay.
Day 2 : Boat trip on Ba Be Lake (B, L, D)
After enjoying breakfast on the terrace, you will take a short drive to the house owner’s boat, which will take you through the three lakes which make up Ba Be and up the Nang River Dong Puong, an enormous tunnel (300m long by 30m high) which stretches through the limestone mountain. We will continue to Cam Ha village where you can observe the peaceful life of the Tay people among the green rice fields. The boat will then venture upriver to the small village of Hua Tang, the quintessential simple and authentic ethnic minority village! You will have lunch in a local house alongside the river.
After lunch, you will take a short walk (20 m) through the jungle takes you to the very scenic Dau Dang Waterfalls. You can then continue the trail to arrive in a large river bend full of colourful local life, with a small harbour. Here the locals unload goods onto their boats to travel across the lake. You will return by boat for another delightful evening in Mr Linh’s Homestay.
Day 3 : Ba Be Lake – Hanoi (B, L)

After breakfast, we will stroll along the riverfront, and visit the lovely Pac Ngoi Village where most Tay people live in traditional houses. You can hike to the upper reaches of the lake, in an area marked by massive limestone cliffs and mountains. Later, your driver will take you to amazing Hua Ma cave and up onto a pass where you can to take amazing photos of the terraced fields. After lunch in a local restaurant, you will continue back to Hanoi, arriving there at around 17:30.
